NYPD Commissioner Lost 23 Cops on 9/11.
An NYPD Commissioner describes the harrowing reality of recovering remains of 23 police officers killed on 9/11, emphasizing the devastating extent of physical destruction where most remains were fragmented beyond recognition and only personal metal items remained identifiable.
Summary
The NYPD Commissioner shares a deeply personal account of losing 23 officers under his command during the September 11 attacks. He describes the gruesome and tragic nature of the recovery process, explaining that many victims were completely vaporized or disintegrated by the force and heat of the attacks. The remains recovered were predominantly fragmented body pieces rather than intact bodies, with more individual pieces found than complete remains.
He provides a stark specific example of two officers whose remains were so thoroughly destroyed that all that could be recovered fit into two orange Home Depot buckets. These buckets contained only the metal items the officers carried: a Glock handgun, a spring from the weapon, a handcuff key, a pair of handcuffs, and a shield pin from one officer's badge. There were no clothing items, no body armor, no body parts—only the metal objects, arranged side by side. This powerful image illustrates the unprecedented destruction and the extraordinary challenges faced by recovery personnel in identifying and returning remains to families.

[0:00] One of the untold stories about 9/11 was the DNA process. I lost 23 people that day. 23 New York cops that work for me. If this was a cup, I could give back most of them to their families in less of a cup than this because they vaporized. They disintegrated. Much of what we found were not human remains. Most of what we found were pieces of meat. You find a finger. You found more body pieces than you found bodies. I got notified that they had found these two cops that worked for us. I went down to ground zero and they basically came out [0:32] with two orange Home Depot buckets. And when I looked…
