Just Hearing This is Terrifying…
A discussion of the historical and archaeological evidence for the brutal methods of crucifixion, specifically how victims were nailed through the heel bone and straddled the cross, citing archaeological findings from the reign of Pontius Pilate.
Summary
The speaker discusses the accuracy of popular depictions of Jesus's crucifixion in media like 'The Passion of the Christ' and 'The Chosen,' noting that while they appreciate these works, not everything portrayed is historically accurate. The speaker references archaeological work by Scott Stripling that has revealed the actual method of crucifixion - victims were positioned straddling the cross with nails driven through the calcaneus (heel bone) to pin them to the cross. This is supported by physical evidence in the Israel Antiquities Museum, specifically the heel bone of Yehohanan, who was crucified during Pontius Pilate's reign. The nail remained embedded in the heel bone because it couldn't be removed, providing direct archaeological evidence of crucifixion methods. The speaker also addresses the medical cause of death during crucifixion, explaining that while asphyxiation was a factor, hematological reports indicate that Jesus also died from massive heart failure.
Key Insights
- Archaeological evidence proves that crucifixion victims were positioned straddling the cross with nails driven through the heel bone (calcaneus) rather than through the feet as commonly depicted
- The Israel Antiquities Museum contains the actual heel bone of Yehohanan, crucified under Pontius Pilate, with the nail still embedded because it couldn't be removed before burial
- Scott Stripling's archaeological work has provided concrete proof of the specific methods used in Roman crucifixion
- Jesus's death involved both asphyxiation and massive heart failure according to hematological reports, not just suffocation as commonly understood
- Popular religious films like 'The Passion of the Christ' and 'The Chosen' don't accurately portray all aspects of the historical brutality of crucifixion

I love the Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson got so many things right, but not everything is correct. And I love Dallas Jenkins, The Chosen. I have no problem with creative license, but people need to know the brutality of what Jesus went through for us. My friend Scott Stripling, the archaeologist, has proven and shown that the victims were crucified through the calcaneus. So if the cross is in the middle, they essentially straddled the cross and the nail goes through the calcaneus all the way through and pins him to the cross. In the Israel Antiquities Museum, we actually have the heel bone of poor old Yehohanan, who was crucified under the reign of Pontius Pilate. They…
