I scaled back my six-figure career to run a local bookstore with my husband — here's why

CNBC Make It

A couple shares their experience transitioning from a six-figure career to running a local bookstore together, emphasizing that their reduced income and lifestyle change has brought greater happiness and fulfillment despite financial uncertainty. They reflect on how overcoming initial fear about the transition has made the experience exciting rather than scary.

Summary

The speakers discuss their decision to scale back a successful six-figure career to focus on operating a local bookstore with their spouse. They explain that while the bookstore has been profitable overall, monthly profitability fluctuates significantly based on tourism and seasonal weather patterns, requiring careful financial planning. The speaker acknowledges that working full-time at the bookstore while reducing online work will result in greatly reduced income. Despite this financial trade-off, they frame the transition as a success focused on sustainability and personal fulfillment rather than growth. The speaker's husband notes the dramatic positive impact on the speaker's happiness and health since making the switch. Both emphasize that while the decision was initially frightening due to leaving an established career, the fear diminished once they actually committed to the bookstore and began working there together.
