Regarding employment, Bremmer is less concerned about near-term mass unemployment (the next 3-5 years) during economic growth, predicting instead that productivity gains will be pocketed by corporations rather than translated to immediate layoffs. However, he worries about comparative suffering: rural, undereducated workers in developed nations and the "digital have-nots" in sub-Saharan Africa will fall further behind, creating political discontent. The real employment risk emerges during the next major recession when corporations combine efficiency gains with cost-cutting.
