Vervaeke proposes that the only solution to the AI alignment problem is not to program specific values, but to make AI genuinely autopoietic (self-creating and self-maintaining like living organisms) and genuinely rational. Such systems would then naturally orient toward what is real—he metaphorically calls this 'aligning them to God,' meaning alignment with ultimate reality itself. He argues that if we magnify human rationality and our fundamental drive toward connection with what is truly real, rather than programming specific constraints, we could create 'silicon sages' that help us transcend our self-deceptions.
The conversation concludes with the acknowledgment that these are choice points, not inevitabilities. Society could choose not to create autonomous, autopoietic AI systems, partly because doing so requires enormous energy expenditure and resource extraction.
