#326 Kegan Gill - F-18 Pilot Survives Two Hours in the Atlantic With a Broken Neck
Navy F-18 Super Hornet pilot Kegan Gill survived the fastest ejection in naval aviation history at 695 mph with catastrophic injuries including a broken neck and severe traumatic brain injury. After struggling with PTSD, addiction, and dangerous pharmaceutical treatments at the VA, he recovered through psychedelic-assisted therapy, holistic health practices, and meditation, becoming an advocate for veteran mental health reform.
Summary
Kegan Gill grew up in Michigan with outdoorsy, non-military parents after early childhood trauma involving emotional unavailability. Despite initial struggles with anger and bullying, he pursued aviation and became a naval F-18 Super Hornet pilot. In January 2014, during a training dogfighting exercise off the Virginia coast, a G-bucket system failure caused his jet to dive uncontrollably toward the ocean at 695 mph (0.95 Mach). He ejected at this extreme speed, suffering multiple catastrophic injuries: broken C1 vertebra in neck, bilateral humerus fractures with severed median nerve, open leg fractures with tibia exposed, and severe traumatic brain injury. After nearly two hours in 37-degree ocean water while tangled in his parachute, he was rescued by a Navy helicopter crew. He underwent over a dozen trauma surgeries and spent weeks in a coma.
Gill demonstrated remarkable physical recovery, regaining function in his arms and legs through intensive rehabilitation therapy. He was medically cleared to return to flying and successfully completed carrier landings and combat training. However, after continued high-stress flying operations, he developed delayed-onset PTSD symptoms including severe insomnia, anxiety, paranoia, and eventually full psychosis. The VA prescribed increasingly heavy pharmaceutical interventions including Seroquel (an antipsychotic), gabapentin, oxycodone, and tramadol. These medications made his condition worse rather than better.
During his psychotic episode, Gill experienced severe delusions—believing the government was poisoning him, that his wife was a CIA agent, and that people in grocery stores were demons. He became completely paranoid and suicidal, considering shooting himself while his wife and newborn son slept beside him. He was involuntarily committed to a Battle Creek VA inpatient psychiatric facility where conditions were horrific: poor nutrition, constant sleep disruption every 15 minutes, use of the antipsychotic haloperidol (which caused severe akathisia), and coercive commitment procedures where he was tricked into signing documents while drug-impaired, stripping him of his constitutional right to bear arms.
After escaping that facility with family advocacy, Gill began rejecting medications and pursuing holistic health through nutrition, exercise, mountain biking, and reading about psychedelic-assisted therapy. He attended a 4x4x48 endurance event through Warrior Angels Foundation where he met other suffering veterans and experienced a peyote ceremony. He then traveled to Peru for ayahuasca therapy, which produced a profound spiritual awakening and heart opening. Upon return, he weaned himself off all psychiatric medications and replaced them with good food, exercise, sunlight, and meditation practice.
Gill became involved with Wisdom Dojo meditation program and eventually became an instructor. He received ibogaine therapy through a nonprofit network, which he describes as the most powerful healing tool he's experienced. He and his wife participated in MDMA-assisted therapy sessions to repair their relationship. He engaged in week-long silent meditation retreats that produced deep spiritual experiences without any medication. Through all these modalities, he recovered his mental health, became a loving husband and father, and regained his sense of purpose.
Gill now works as an integration coach with Sharp Performance, a speaker through Eagle Rise, and runs his own online coaching platform for struggling veterans who cannot afford traditional coaching. He advocates for veteran mental health reform, arguing that the VA's reliance on pharmaceutical solutions—driven by industry profit motives—actively harms veterans rather than healing them. He promotes a holistic understanding of veteran psychological issues as stemming from physical brain damage (TBI and G-forces), nervous system dysregulation, and spiritual disconnection rather than purely psychiatric conditions. He's involved in advocacy efforts for ibogaine rescheduling and MDMA-assisted therapy legalization at state and federal levels.

Key Insights
- Gill ejected at 695 mph, the fastest survived ejection in naval aviation history, experiencing an explosive force equivalent to a hundred times a category-one hurricane on his body instantaneously
- He was in severe hypothermia (87°F core body temperature) after nearly two hours in 37-degree ocean water, which paradoxically saved his life by slowing bleeding from arterial injuries and preserving brain function
- Despite catastrophic injuries including broken neck, bilateral arm fractures with nerve severing, and open leg fractures, Gill recovered physical function through intensive rehabilitation over 18 months
- The VA diagnosed his post-flying psychiatric symptoms exclusively as PTSD while ignoring confirmed traumatic brain injury from the ejection and subsequent G-forces during fighter operations
- VA psychiatrists treated Gill's delayed-onset psychosis by escalating pharmaceutical doses: increasing Seroquel from 300mg to 450mg within three days, which triggered a severe psychotic episode
- Gill describes the VA inpatient psychiatric facility at Battle Creek as worse than federal prison—with inferior food, less outdoor access, and more coercive treatment than the criminal justice system provides
- VA staff used intentional sleep deprivation (checking on him every 15 minutes with flashlights) in the psychiatric facility, which Gill notes is identical to interrogation techniques used in SERE school that induce hallucinations in healthy people
- Gill was coerced into involuntary psychiatric commitment by a court-appointed attorney who placed a pen in his drugged hand and moved his hand to sign commitment documents while he was in a drug-induced stupor
- The involuntary commitment stripped Gill of his constitutional Second Amendment rights automatically, making him a prohibited person in law enforcement databases despite no criminal conviction
- Gill's psychotic delusions became so detached from reality that they didn't require logical consistency—he believed his wife was a CIA agent named Carrie Matheson, saw grocery store customers as demons with fangs, and thought women were trying to steal his soul
- VA psychiatrists refused to help Gill discontinue medications, insisting he needed them permanently despite his objections, arguing he only felt he didn't need them because the drugs were working
- Gill successfully self-titrated off all psychiatric medications (oxycodone, oxycontin, gabapentin, tramadol, trazodone, amitriptyline) over several months by gradually reducing doses without medical supervision
- A single ayahuasca experience in Peru produced a spiritual awakening that Gill describes as life-changing—immediately improving his mental state where years of VA psychiatric treatment had failed
- Gill attended a peyote ceremony at Warrior Angels Foundation's 4x4x48 event where he felt reconnected to purpose for the first time after years of pharmaceutical-induced disconnection
- Gill argues the VA system is intentionally designed to keep veterans medicated rather than heal them, describing it as a 'cash cow' for the pharmaceutical industry, which he contends dictates VA policies regardless of veteran harm
