The Case Against Closed Internets and Closed AI #ai #podcast

The speaker argues that while closed internets like AOL and Prodigy existed historically, the open internet has proven to be transformational for businesses. They contend that AI, as a similarly transformational technology requiring diverse applications, should likewise be developed as open technology rather than closed systems.

Summary

The speaker begins by acknowledging the historical existence of closed internet platforms, specifically citing America Online and Prodigy as examples from earlier eras. They note that while these closed systems were effective in their time, they contrast this with the open internet model that has subsequently emerged and proven highly beneficial. The speaker emphasizes that the open internet has enabled numerous companies to transform their operations and business models successfully. Transitioning to AI technology, the speaker frames it as similarly transformational to the internet itself. However, they argue that because AI needs to be applied across many different use cases and contexts, open technologies for AI are fundamental to realizing its full potential. The underlying argument is that the openness which benefited the internet should similarly be applied to AI development.
