Peter Lynaman presents the SAM Elimu Education Program, a Kenyan nonprofit that has supported over 300 students since 2003 by providing comprehensive educational and life support services. Beyond tuition, the organization offers mentorship, seminars on intellectual topics, and practical life skills training, fundamentally transforming students' lives and opportunities.

Summary

Peter Lynaman, based in Philadelphia, describes his work with the SAM Alimo Education Program in Kenya, where SAM stands for "Save a Mind" and Elimu means "education" in Swahili. The organization has operated for 23 years since 2003, growing from an initial cohort of four students to graduating over 300 students across high school, associate degrees, university, master's degrees, and even doctoral programs. Lynaman emphasizes that without the program's intervention, these students would have remained in what he describes as "the blackness of ignorance." The program's scope extends far beyond traditional education funding. Students receive comprehensive support including food, clothing, and housing. Intellectually, the organization provides writing and reading programs, weekly seminars on diverse topics ranging from World War II to the Beatles, and monthly sessions designed to cultivate student curiosity about history and the world. Practically, the program teaches job interview skills and resume preparation. Lynaman credits the program's success to an exceptional team in Kenya led by Faith Bayonga and notes that the work has profoundly changed his own life as well as the lives of many students. He concludes by inviting potential donors and volunteers to learn more about the organization's work and offering to include interested individuals in his annual August trips to Kenya.
