From Consulting to AI Product Manager| Prabhjot's Inspiring Job Search Journey
Prabhjot shares his career transition from consulting PM to an AI product manager role at Axon, highlighting how the Intentional Job Search (IJS) program helped him overcome challenges in the US job market through storytelling, mock interviews, and building a strong professional network.
Summary
Prabhjot is a product manager with 8 years of experience who started as a software engineer in India working in insurance, then moved to Canada in compliance, and spent the last 3 years in the US hardware space. He recently joined Axon, a law enforcement technology company, as a PM on their body-worn camera product, which is focusing heavily on AI integration. Before joining IJS, Prabhjot struggled with his job search in the US market despite having substantial PM experience. His main challenges were: (1) not knowing how to tell his stories effectively, which is a critical skill in US interviews, (2) lacking warm referrals, and (3) being unfamiliar with the interview format and depth of storytelling expected in the US market compared to India. He discovered IJS through another student's referral to Axon and decided to join. The program's structure significantly impacted his success: it required completing a structured set of pre-application tasks with specific question formats, extensive written story development with multiple rounds of coaching feedback (sometimes 7-8 iterations on a single answer), and numerous mock interviews with both coaches and peers. These mocks not only prepared him but also led to friendships and referrals that eventually helped him land offers. A key breakthrough was creating a comprehensive presentation of his star project—a first-of-a-kind physical AI product he had previously built—which he showed in every interview. This presentation included go-to-market strategy, pricing, product details, and other end-to-end information that impressed interviewers and generated spontaneous follow-up questions. Prabhjot interviewed with Axon through a referral, and although the initial role was filled due to personal delays, Axon reached out 2 months later when another position opened. He ultimately received two offers—one from Axon and one from a friend referral within IJS—and negotiated his offer upward with guidance. His transition into AI was facilitated by his previous role building a physical AI product, which gave him deep understanding of AI/ML collaboration and product management in emerging tech spaces. He emphasizes that IJS is not magic but requires 10-12 hours weekly commitment, serious engagement with feedback, networking, and consistent effort alongside day jobs. He also credits the community for helping him prepare for case study rounds through peer feedback.

When she started searching for a role in the American market, she quickly realized the rules were different. Storytelling mattered. Warm referrals mattered. And firing applications into the void wasn't going to cut it. In this conversation, Prabhjot shares what shifted — how she learned to write and own her stories, why brutal mock feedback was actually the thing that moved the needle, and how a single presentation built around her top project carried her through multiple rounds at multiple companies simultaneously. She ended up with two offers. She negotiated. She joined Axon as a PM on their BodyWorn Camera team, now sitting at the intersection of hardware and AI. The part she didn't expect? The peers she met along the way became the network that got her there. Watch and Enjoy! Shobhit Chugh. Key Insights
- Prabhjot realized that coming from India and Canada to the US market, he was not focusing on telling his stories properly, which is a critical skill in itself that differs significantly from interview practices in other markets
- The IJS program required him to write down his stories and then go through multiple review cycles (7-8 back-and-forths on single answers), which helped him identify missing or non-critical information in his narratives
- Creating a detailed presentation of his star project—a first-of-a-kind physical AI product with go-to-market strategy, pricing, and end-to-end product details—became a powerful tool that he opened in every interview and generated substantial follow-up questions
- Prabhjot's previous experience building a physical AI product (before joining Axon) directly helped him understand what Axon and other companies needed, because he had worked closely with AI/ML teams and managed the product end-to-end
- Prabhjot emphasizes that IJS requires 10-12 hours of weekly time commitment and serious engagement with feedback; it is not a magic solution but rather a program that demands hard work, networking, and consistent effort while managing day jobs
