Before you do, watch what happens when Cowork and Claude Code get exactly the same folder, the same model and the same prompt. I stay in the Claude desktop app the whole time. No terminal, not once. The tests run side by side. First, "who are you?": Claude Code reads the contract in the folder and introduces itself as the orchestrator. Cowork does not, even on a second try. Then daily tasks, then a client follow-up email built from the notes, the invoice and the tone of voice already stored in the folder. Cowork does fine here once the folder is attached, and I say so on camera. The gap opens at the rules. The folder carries safety guards: secrets never go into notes, some files are never overwritten. Claude Code blocks the token and names the rule that stopped it. Cowork writes it into a note and moves on. Then sub-agents: Claude Code hands research to one agent on a cheaper model and design to another, while the orchestrator keeps the overview. Cowork is one agent doing everything, and its finished one-pager lives as an artifact in the cloud, not in the folder. Same model throughout. Different harness, different results. That is the key takeaway, and it is the difference between chatting with AI and building with it. If you are a professional who wants AI to work on your job, the local folder plus Claude Code is still the best way I know.
