Epinephrine (adrenaline) is released separately in the brain via the locus coeruleus and in the body via adrenal glands. Exercise of any kind, caffeine, cyclic hyperventilation (Wim Hof-style breathing), and cold exposure all increase epinephrine and neural energy. Huberman notes the bidirectional relationship between action and locus coeruleus activation: physical movement increases epinephrine release, which in turn increases brain excitability and alertness.
For acetylcholine, baseline levels require dietary sources of choline (eggs, beef, chicken, mushrooms, kidney beans). Acute increases come from nicotine (though smoking is discouraged), alpha-GPC (300mg), and huperzine-A. Huberman uses these supplements before cognitive or physical work sessions to sharpen focus. Unlike other neuromodulators, acetylcholine supports both high-energy and calm, relaxed focus states.
Serotonin increases through physical contact (holding hands, hugging), gratitude (particularly receiving gratitude rather than giving it), and observing others exchange gratitude. Nutritionally, tryptophan-containing foods support serotonin synthesis. Myo-inositol (900mg) is highlighted as particularly effective for improving sleep quality and depth. Huberman cautions against viewing serotonin increases as direct replacements for prescription treatments.
