5. Challenger shuttle disaster (1986): Richard Feynman, despite initial reluctance, conducted independent investigation, publicly demonstrated O-ring brittleness, and insisted his detailed findings be included in the official report despite institutional pressure to smooth over conclusions.
Gurley notes that all five catastrophes combined resulted in 5,000 deaths and $349 billion in costs. COVID-19 caused 15 million deaths and $45 trillion in damage—3,000 times larger. Yet, unlike these other disasters, COVID lacked: committed newsrooms with 30+ investigators, dogged investigative reporters with institutional backing, bipartisan congressional committees, standalone investigations with independent figures like Feynman or Kurokawa, science-funded third-party investigations, or major victim lawsuits seeking root cause.
Gurley identifies five figures as 'blockers' rather than 'experts': Francis Collins (NIH), Anthony Fauci (NIAID), Peter Daszak (EcoHealth Alliance), Jeremy Farrar (Wellcome Trust), and Ralph Baric (UNC virologist). He provides four reasons they functioned as blockers: (1) virology insiders with institutional incentives to circle wagons; (2) leaders of a misinformation campaign promoting animal spillover as "decidedly determined cause" while labeling lab-leak questions as conspiracy theories; (3) pre-COVID gain-of-function advocates who wrote papers like "Proximal Origins" in a week without genuine investigation; (4) they never conducted searches and should still be searching.

These women faced attacks for their work despite uncovering critical documents.
A central revelation is the DEFUSE proposal, uncovered by the Drastic team three years post-COVID. This EcoHealth Alliance document proposed inserting a furin cleavage site into a bat coronavirus at the S1-S2 junction to increase viral transmission to animals. Gurley notes that 78% of surveyed scientists had never heard of it despite it being highly relevant evidence. When run through AI using CAPA (Captive and Preventive Action) methodology, the document is classified as "direct investigational lead," "highly critical," and "primary document evidence—highest tier."
Gurley emphasizes that had DEFUSE been exposed in January 2020, the investigation trajectory would have been entirely different. He notes that searchers and AI suggest following documentary leads at Duke University and UNC, where researchers are encountering institutional resistance from the universities and state of North Carolina.
Gurley concludes by calling for newsroom investment in COVID investigation, formation of a truly independent commission, and support for continued searchers. He argues the issue should remain nonpartisan and focused on root cause and prevention rather than prosecution.
